Laser engraving on glass is permanent, elegant and fully personalised. Find out when it is the right choice and what to expect.
Why Is Glass Engraving Special?
Glass carries an engraving with exceptional elegance. Unlike labels or print techniques, laser engraving on glass does not fade, peel or lose its lustre. Every pass of the laser or diamond tip is permanent — visible for decades after it was made. This is why engraving on glasses, decanters and bottles is one of the most requested personalisation services at our studio, which has 35 years of tradition.
The Technique: Why Glass Engraving Is Demanding
Glass is fragile. When a laser acts directly on it, heat spreads unevenly, which can cause micro-fractures or even breakage. Professional studios solve this with two techniques:
- Wet paper method: Damp paper or masking tape is applied to the glass surface before engraving. The paper absorbs heat and distributes it evenly. The result is a smooth, frosted-white engraving without cracks.
- Laser defocusing: A slightly defocused beam delivers softer, more even energy. The engraving is slightly less sharp, but significantly safer for the glass.
Laser power for glass engraving is significantly lower than for wood or metal — typically 20–40% at galvo laser settings. Speed is high (300–600 mm/s) to prevent heat concentration. We have refined these settings over years for every type of glass we process.
Laser or Diamond Engraving — Which Is Better?
Laser engraving produces a frosted, white-grey finish clearly visible on clear glass — ideal for precise logos, fine text and photo-halftone motifs. Diamond engraving cuts deeper and suits thicker glassware. Both techniques are permanent and do not affect the function of the piece — an engraved glass is just as dishwasher-safe as before.
